Installation on Microsoft Windows

Before you can use Renew, you must have Java 1.4 or higher installed. You should download and install a Java virtual machine, where we recommend the Java Runtime Environment for Windows 95/98/NT by Sun.

For the installation of the Java runtime, please refer to the instructions that come with the executables. Renew is a full Java application, not an applet, and it is not intended to be used from WWW browsers like Netscape or Internet Explorer. You must install a standalone Java.

You should have got the file renew2.0.1base.jar, which is a jar compressed archive. To uncompress the base package, issue the command

  jar xf renew2.0.1base.jar
A directory renew2.0.1 will be created in the current directory. Documentation files, are placed in the subdirectory renew2.0.1\doc. The subdirectory renew2.0.1\samples contains example nets. The functionality of Renew has been decomposed into several plug-ins which reside as jar files in the subdirectory renew2.0.1\plugins. This is also the place where you can add extra plug-ins. The file renew2.0.1\loader.jar is a jar-file which contains the Renew loader. It should not be unpacked, because it can be executed directly.

In the directory renew2.0.1\bin\win you will find the installation script installrenew.bat. This script must be started from its own directory, so that it can determine the correct paths.

  cd renew2.0.1\bin\win
  installrenew
Now the batch file renew2.0.1\bin\win\renew.bat will start the Renew editor. There might be rare cases where it is appropriate to modify the startup script manually for further configuration.

If this does not succeed, refer to the manual installation instructions. Maybe you also want to perform a source installation.
